'Impact' is your initiation into the psychedelic world of Aspects
- a world where hip-hop collides with surf rock, reggae and folk.
Aspects are vocalists El Eye (Ian Merchant) and Probe Mantis (Ben
Weaver), producer Specify (Ryan Jarrett) and beat-boxer Monkey Moo
(Rory Donnelly).
The first sonic salvo from their forthcoming sophomore opus 'Mystery
Theatre', 'Impact' is a no-nonsense dancefloor anthem. It's a sound-clash
between the themes from Bonanza and Grandstand with El-Eye and Probe
Mantis' catching the listener in a verbal crossfire of machine-gun
raps; that veer from the sublime ('I counter your kata with high
calibre chatter / shatter your tonearm and turntable platter') to
the ridiculous ('Run tell your mum I'm hung well / this one holds
weight like dumbells').
Aspects pals Little Barrie reimagine the original as a full on
rock workout harking back to the likes of The Sonics or Dick Dale,
featuring Barrie's hard-edged guitar and Wayne's bone-shattering
drums resulting in the surely garage-rock / hip hop anthem! B-side
'Wayback's Neptunesesque drums will have you marvelling over what
can be accomplished by Specify and his trusty sampler, as well as
introduce you to the incredible human beat-box talents of Monkey
Moo.
Moving on to the main course - 'Mystery Theatre' is an album unhindered
by trends, drawing inspiration from the past to create new musical
forms. Beatmeister Specify explains, “To understand our music
you've got to imagine Hip-Hop existed in the 60’s. We use
analogue production values and psychedelic song writing to create
our own type of sound; 60’s rap!” El Eye adds; “We
make pirate music. We’re pirates, sailing along plundering
genres for their soul, assimilating their funk then we’re
moving on to the next port.” Joining Aspects on their voyage
are kindred spirits The Bees who supply the Beach Boys-style harmonics
for the chorus of the sun-drenched 'Off The Lip', and Little Barrie
again who contribute raw soul power and intricate guitar work on
lonely-hearts anthem “Soul Sister”.
'Mystery Theatre' has all the ingredients required to be a future
classic. So, quiet please ladies and gents, the curtain is about
to rise…
